6 of the best dogs to run with

Here are some of the best endurance athletes of the dog world. But bear in mind, any dog can run, says Jenny Lee, an experienced canicross racer and coach. ‘Don’t just go by breed, it’s about the individual dog’s fitness level, experience, age and preference, too,’ she says.

1/ Siberian Husky

A study from
the University of California, US, found huskies had the highest sustained metabolic rate of any breed. They are born not just to run, but to pull.

2/ Weimaraner

A medium-sized German gun dog with speed and endurance. A five-year old Weimaraner holds the current fastest known time
for a human-dog mile – a blistering 4 minutes 13 seconds.
