Five Fab Bikes

Boardman Road Race

This entry-level race bike looks better than it has a right to at this price. Standout features are the Shimano Sora shifter/brake units, while the 18-speed gearing delivers reliable shifting performance and complements the FSA Vero compact chainset, allowing you to tackle hills at a higher cadence. We loved how it felt on the road: the full-carbon fork soaked up the bumps and when we encountered a hill, the stiff aluminium frame responded well to a kick on the pedals. Voted best on test, TW June 2011.

Trek Speed Concept 7.5

If you're looking for a time trial bike that's under £3000 but rides like a more expensive bike, try the Trek Speed Concept 7.5. We loved the plush road feel and the way it seemed to float over rough surfaces. It also accelerated quickly and climbed well. Cutting-edge aerodynamics borrowed from the car industry include Kammtail tube design and all cabling and rear brakes are integrated.

Cannondale CAADX 5 105

This cyclo cross bike is a great investment if you'd rather ride out the winter than sit at home on your turbo trainer. At a cross race, it will leap into action thanks to the light, stiff frame. Cannondale's hourglass seat stays guarantee comfort and the components performed perfectly when we took it for a test ride. You can also fit a rack and mudguards for commuting.

Cervelo P3

This bike is a regular top performer at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, and on closer inspection it's easy to see why. The exceptionally stiff and light frameset - which includes frame, fork, aero seatpost and headset - wastes no energy, while the generous cockpit will suit triathletes in for the long haul during training or races. A wide range of sizes means the bike will fit just about anyone.
